In the afternoon, participants will split into facilitated breakout groups and will work with the Group Leader to produce descriptions of the current "state of the industry / community" and make recommendations of key actions and R&D priorities for the following three target themes:

1. Short-term and long-term R&D priorities
What are the R&D priorities for short-term 'right now' sensor web development and deployment, compared to the R&D priorities for long-term, 'big picture' sensor web development and maturation? If they differ, what is the recommended R&D roadmap to transition from the short-term to the long-term, and what are the likely challenges?

2. Theoretical and operational R&D priorities
What are the critical gaps between 'in the lab/on the bench' research and development, and 'in the field/on the ground' deployment and operations? What are the technical R&D priorities that will close those gaps? What are the recommended actions that R&D organizations (or collaborations) can take to close those gaps?

3. Multi-sector R&D collaboration
What opportunities can industry, government, and academia take advantage of by increasing collaborative R&D? What challenges are there and what initiatives or actions can reduce these challenges? How can the Canadian R&D community increase its participation and contribution to international, collaborative sensor web research?

By the end of the afternoon, each group will develop a position, recommendation, list of priorities, directions, opportunities, or key follow-up questions, as appropriate. At the end of the day, the Group Leader from each breakout group will give a summary of key results. Notes taken by the Workshop Assistants will be used as the foundation for the published workshop report.
